Freshwater
Bass, Saratoga, Yellowbelly and Murray Cod fishing near Brisbane.
Undiscovered is the only word I can think of
to describe this fabulous fishery! It consists of two huge impoundments
called Moogerah and Maroon dams a few miles apart, either one would
be regarded by us as an exceptional fishery but two is like winning
the lottery. As an added bonus you have the mountains of the Great
Dividing Range as a backdrop with stacks of wildlife into the bargain.
If our multiple tournament-winning guide thinks the fishing would
be better on the other lake he simply puts his boat on the trailer
and takes you to the other dam. We think Australia’s freshwater
fishing scene will really take off over the next couple of years
when people start to realise how good it is. The fishery is excellent
all year round as our guide seems to find a new technique every
time we go. We have never caught less than a dozen fish when we
have been and these are often trophy fish approaching sixty centimetres.
One lake does tend to produce larger fish as there is a different
type of bait fish present which makes the bass grow faster! We
do not bait fish on either of these waters. Fly fishing can produce
some superb sport and we can advise you on which time of year is
best if this is your preferred method, however an open minded approach
will lead to you landing more fish. These dams are stocked regularly
with fingerlings and is probably the furthest south you can expect
to catch Saratoga, indeed along with Yellowbelly and Murray Cod
these three species have hardly been touched in the lakes as most
people target the Bass.
We have fished here many times and cannot recommend it highly enough. If you
can only afford the time for one day it is close enough to Brisbane and the Gold
Coast. We pick up and drop off for a very reasonable fee. The best way of experiencing
the fishing here is to spend four or five days fishing and then set off for a
week or so on our specialist Murray Cod trip which takes place a few hours drive
away.
The accommodation for the dams is a good quality motel or pub, but we can arrange
a more luxurious resort style stay if you so wish. The downside is you are further
from the fishing !
Try this fishery soon before the locals discover it, the last three times we
fished here on weekdays there wasn’t anyone else there until the last time
when we were leaving. Harry our guide looked quite indignant!
