Airlie
Beach / Varied Fishing
This is a destination suitable for both
anglers and non anglers with so much to do and see you could
easily spend several weeks here, especially if you combine fishing
with sight seeing and relaxing. This area is called the Gateway
to the Whitsundays for a good reason – there are a host
of trips available to several island resorts, as well as trips
to the outer reef to snorkel and view the coral of the famous
Great Barrier Reef. Why not stay on one of the Whitsunday Islands
and enjoy the fabulous beaches and turquoise sea? Or even join
a yacht for a few days away from it all cruising these beautiful
waters. We can arrange it all to suit your own personal requirements.
The fishing is very varied with all the usual reef fish and pelagic
species found within easy cruising from nearby Shute Harbour.
Estuary fishing up the local Proserpine river can be very exciting
on the right tides with Barramundi, Mangrove Jack, Trevally and
a host of other species present. You can also fish a very exciting
local water called Peter Faust Dam, which in my opinion is a
fabulous water with some enormous Barramundi in it and they are
still getting bigger .You need to time trips for the warmer months
and also the correct tidal phases to maximise your chances. It
is normal to make excellent catches at any time of the year,
you just need to adjust your fishing style to take into account
lower water temperatures and possibly fish at different times
of the day if you travel in the cooler months.
Our Guides are also allowed to fish for a limited amount of days per year within
the Great Barrier Reef marine park offering some very exciting fishing on lure
and fly with some Permit present amongst all the other species. In fact we are
trying to develop this fishery further as we think we have only scratched the
surface so far. All in all Airlie Beach offers so much to everyone it would be
difficult to leave off your list of places to visit. We even cast a line outside
our accomodation when we were there last Christmas and caught a lot of fish but
I am ashamed to admit we lost all the big ones - they just kept on going!
The accomodation we offer varies from basic cabins to superb bed and breakfast
apartments ( Australian Style) or an excellent quality resort. The last two overlook
the truly fantastic Coral Sea and are within very easy walking distance of many
restaurants and shops in Airlie Beach. The town also has a fantastic new swimming
lagoon, local market and is just a few minutes from two National Parks
.
